Mumbai is home to some of the finest public swimming facilities in the country—Olympic-standard pools built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Dadar, Chembur, Kandivali, and Dahisar.

Lack of Transparency in Membership Process: Citizens had no clear way to know how and when to register. Long queues, unclear instructions, and manual form submissions created hesitation and distrust.

No Unified, User-Friendly Platform: There was no single platform that worked seamlessly across devices. The experience wasn’t intuitive—making it difficult for both young swimmers and elderly users to navigate the process confidently.

Outdated and Non-Scalable System: The existing process couldn’t support high demand, new pool additions, or real-time updates. There was no flexibility to scale or introduce features like slot availability or digital payments.

The BMC Swimming Pools provide safe, clean, and professionally managed aquatic spaces for people of all ages. With a focus on health, fitness, and community engagement, the recent digital upgrades now make it easier than ever to check schedules, book sessions online, and stay informed about upcoming events and training programs.

Challenges

While working on the BMC Swimming Pools project, we faced several systemic and user-experience challenges. Despite the presence of world-class swimming facilities across Mumbai, most citizens were unaware of their existence due to poor visibility and outreach. The registration process was opaque and frustrating—people had to stand in long queues, fill out physical forms, and deal with unclear instructions, often without any assurance of getting a slot. This discouraged potential users and eroded trust in the system. Additionally, there was no unified digital platform to support registrations, check availability, or manage updates in real time. The outdated backend infrastructure was also a significant barrier, limiting scalability and making it impossible to handle growing demand or the addition of new features such as digital payments or coaching slots. The lack of accessibility for both younger and older users further underscored the need for a complete overhaul.

Our approach to solving these challenges was centered on accessibility, trust, and simplicity. We built a responsive, user-friendly platform that worked seamlessly across devices and could be used by anyone—from a five-year-old beginner to a ninety-five-year-old swimming enthusiast. The interface was designed with large touchpoints, clear instructions, and a calm visual tone, ensuring a stress-free experience for all age groups. We implemented real-time slot availability, giving users full visibility into open sessions before they booked—eliminating guesswork and reinforcing trust. A fully paperless, secure registration process replaced the outdated manual system, with instant confirmations sent via SMS and email. Behind the scenes, the backend was built to be scalable and future-ready, allowing BMC to add new pools, passes, and coaching options without disrupting the user experience. Ultimately, the project not only modernized the system but also restored public confidence in BMC’s swimming infrastructure.
