Mumbai’s oldest museum showcasing cultural heritage.
The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum, located within the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Rani Baug) in Byculla East, is Mumbai's oldest museum. Established in 1857 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bombay, it was renamed in 1975 to honor Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, a prominent physician, historian, and philanthropist who played a pivotal role in its establishment.
Despite being Mumbai’s oldest museum and a treasure trove of the city’s cultural legacy, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum’s digital presence did not reflect its historical significance or contemporary relevance. The website was visually outdated, lacked intuitive structure, and offered limited storytelling or engagement tools—making it difficult for visitors to explore collections, exhibitions, or plan their visits with ease.
The ticketing experience was fragmented across physical counters and limited online interfaces, with no unified platform or consistent branding. This disjointed system created confusion for visitors, increased operational inefficiencies, and undermined trust in the booking process—particularly among first-time and international guests.
As mobile usage continues to rise, the absence of a mobile-friendly experience proved to be a significant barrier. The website struggled with poor responsiveness, broken layouts, and unfriendly forms on smartphones—resulting in a frustrating user journey and missed engagement opportunities, especially among tech-savvy audiences and tourists.
Located in Byculla, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is the city's oldest museum, originally established in 1857. It showcases Mumbai’s rich cultural and industrial history through an extensive collection of decorative arts, archaeological artifacts, maps, manuscripts, and rare photographs. The museum serves as a vibrant center for heritage, education, and contemporary exhibitions, attracting students, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts from across the world.
Year: 2024
Work: Digital Exhibitory
The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum faced several digital challenges prior to its transformation. Its outdated website lacked modern design, mobile responsiveness, and intuitive navigation, making it difficult for users to access essential information such as exhibit details, visiting hours, and event updates. The platform also offered limited engagement tools—there were no interactive features, virtual tours, or educational resources to connect with students, tourists, or researchers. Additionally, the content management system was restrictive, making it hard for museum staff to update content without technical assistance.
To address these issues, a fully redesigned, responsive website was developed with a clean and heritage-inspired visual identity. The site structure was optimized to highlight exhibitions, ticketing, and educational programs clearly and efficiently. Interactive elements, such as virtual exhibition previews and multimedia galleries, were introduced to boost user engagement. Moreover, a custom content management system was implemented to empower the museum team with the ability to update and manage content easily—ensuring the digital experience reflects the museum’s rich cultural legacy and continues to evolve with its audience.
