The Mumbai Zoo (Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan) is one of the oldest zoos in India, located in the heart of Mumbai. The goal of this project was to digitally transform the zoo’s online presence — making it more accessible, interactive, and informative for modern audiences including students, families, tourists, and wildlife enthusiasts.
The Mumbai Zoo, nestled in the heart of the city, is home to over 6600 trees and 270 animals. Its recent digital transformation now allows visitors to easily explore offerings and book tickets online, enhancing the overall experience.

Resistance to Change Staff accustomed to old systems were hesitant to adopt digital tools and new processes & design . Digital Literacy Among Visitors Some visitors, especially elderly or first-time users, were unfamiliar with online booking and digital payments. Infrastructure Upgradation Needed stable internet, kiosks setup, QR scanners, and secure payment systems across entry points. Data Security & Privacy Compliance Ensuring user data protection and adherence to government IT and cyber security norms (e.g., UIDAI guidelines). System Integration & Testing Integrating multiple modules like ticketing, parking, souvenir shops, payment gateways, and audit systems was complex. Real-Time Visitor Count Accuracy Required syncing between kiosk, online portals, and manual validations to avoid count mismatches. Payment Gateway Down time & Reliability Ensuring UPI (GPay, PhonePe), card, and net banking options were consistently available without downtime. Backend Training & Support Continuous training and helpdesk support needed for zoo staff to handle queries, manage dashboards, and troubleshoot issues. Language & Accessibility Making the portal user-friendly with multilingual options and accessibility features for all types of users. Public Awareness & Adoption Educating visitors about the new system via signage, announcements, and social media to drive adoption.
Visitors can now book tickets in advance from the official website Eliminates long queues and helps manage crowd flow during peak hours. Seamless payments via UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe), credit/debit cards, and net banking. Promotes cashless transactions and financial transparency. Installed kiosks at the zoo entrance for quick on-site digital ticket purchase. Reduces dependency on manual ticket counters and improves service efficiency. Real-time integration of ticketing, visitor logs, and revenue reports in a secure cloud-based system. Facilitates audit readiness, data analytics, and decision-making. Digital passes for parking with slot availability tracking. Online and kiosk-based shopping for zoo-branded souvenirs and educational books. Fast entry through QR-based e-tickets and validation security check terminal Personalized notifications & event alerts messages via email/SMS.
